Problems faced by elderly in bathroom and water closets

Abstract


The present study was conducted during the year 2017-18 with the objectives to study the socio-economicstatus of elderly, to study the existing condition of bathroom and water closets of elderly and to study the problems facedby elderly in relation to bathroom and water closet. The sample comprised of 120 elderly population aged 60 years andabove residing in Hubballi and Dharwad cities. Self structured interview schedule was used to collect the data. The resultsrevealed that higher percentage of elderly male families (44.28 %) and elderly female families (42 %) belonged to the upperclass followed by upper middle class (male 17.14 %, female 22 %), lower middle class (male 15.71 %, female 18 %) andlower upper class (male 10 %, female 8 %) as per the Kuppuswamy SES scale (2017) (Sharma, 2017). Among 120 selectedsample, majority of the elderly (78.33 %) were using separate bathroom and water closet and 21.26 per cent of elderly wereusing bathroom cum water closet. The slippery flooring, lack of grab bars, difficulty in using Indian toilet, difficulty inoperating taps, insufficient water supply, insufficient force of water, unsafe hot water facility, not enough artificial lightingwere the major problems faced by majority of the selected elderly and these were ranked from 1st to 8th, respectively. It isinteresting to know that age and improper bathroom and water closet conditions had significant relationship with theproblems faced by elderly in bathroom and water closets. As the age progressed extent of problems faced in bathroom andwater closets is also increased. Similarly, poor bathroom and water closet conditions led to increased problems faced by theelderly. Hence, the bathroom and water closets should be planned ergonomically considering the suggestions of elderly tomake their life comfortable and secure.
