Extent of Adoption of Integrated Pest Management Practices by Sugarcane Growers

Abstract


The research study was conducted in Belgaum and Bagalkot Districts of Karnataka during 2004-2005, with the sample size of 180 respondents.  The expost-facto research design was used for the study. Higher adoption was observed in hand weeding, sett treatment with carbondizum solution (0.1%), frequently irrigate the crop to manage termite incidence, chemical method is used in management of early shoot borer and wooly aphid incidence, detrash lower leaves in management of scale incidence, deep tillage and selection of disease seed material in management of red rot disease and set rot. Where as lower adoption noticed in biological methods (Trichogramma egg parasite,) mulching, catch termite queen and destroy it, wide row / paired row spacing, judicious use of nitrogen and irrigation and growing resistant variety. Education, Farming experience, Risk orientation, Attitude towards Sustainable cultivation practices, management orientation, Achievement motivation, Innovative proneness and Extension contact of respondents had positive and significant relationship with their adoption of IPM practices. Multiple regression analysis indicated that, the seventeen independent variables put together had contributed to 43.18 per cent (R2=0.4318) variation in extent of adoption of IPM practices.
