Abstract

The total tribal population of India stands at 10,42,81,034 as per 2011 census and accounts for 8.6 per cent ofthe total population of the country. Siddhis is the primitive tribal group of Karnataka which are lagging behind thedemographic, social and economic indicators. The major focus of various studies related to health issues among tribalpopulations of India has been on malnutrition or under nutrition. Therefore, it is worth investigating the changing perspectivesof nutritional and health status of rural and Siddhi tribal group. Precisely for this reason present paper highlights nutritionalstatus in terms of Body mass index (BMI) and Waist hip ratio (WHR) and health status in terms of health problems amongthe rural and Siddhi tribal mothers. Study was conducted during 2017 on 60 rural and 60 Siddhi tribal mothers, with agegroup of 18-49 years, in six villages of Dharwad and Uttar Kannada districts of Karnataka state. Structured interviewschedule was used for collection of personal characteristics. Nutritional status was measured by using anthropometricsmeasurements and health status was assessed by PGI- health questionnaire. Differential research design was used to knowthe difference in nutritional and health status between rural and Siddhi tribal mothers. Results of the present study indicatedthat no significant difference and association were observed in the nutritional status of rural and Siddhi tribal mothers.Significant association was found in health status between rural and Siddhi tribal mothers and surprisingly rural mothersreported more health problems than the Siddhi tribal mothers, because 17 and 48 per cent of rural mothers were underweightand overweight, respectively. Highly significant negative relation was observed between nutritional status and healthproblems indicating BMI affects the health status. To improve the health status of the rural mothers frequent health campsneed to be arranged to assess the problems and suggest proper remedies.
