Studies on engineering properties of foxtail millet [Setaria italica(L.) Beauv .]

Abstract


Engineering properties of foxtail millet [Setaria italica(L.) Beauv .] are necessary for the design of equipments tohandle, transport, process and store the crop produce. The mean size of foxtail millet grains was 2.78 ± 0.15 mm at amoisture content of 11.06 ± 0.09 % (w .b.).  The foxtail millet was found to be spheroid in shape. The mean roundness,sphericity , surface area, bulk density, true density , porosity and thousand kernel weight of foxtail millet were 0.30 ± 0.07,0.65 ± 0.05, 6.15 ± 0.38 mm2, 724.00 ± 47.48 kg.m-3, 1196.00 ± 83.72 kg.m-3, 39.46 ± 2.20 % and 2.36 ± 0.17 g,respectively . The proximate composition of foxtail millet flour viz.,moisture content, carbohydrate, crude protein, crudefat, crude fibre and total ash were found to be 10.77 ± 0.34, 64.71 ± 2.3, 12.82 ± 0.18, 3.71 ± 0.15, 6.15 ± 0.19 and 1.64 ±0.05 %, respectively.  The colour values of foxtail millet flour in terms of L*,  a*and  b*values were found to be 61.38 ± 2.21,3.91 ± 0.05 and 16.2 ± 0.65, respectively. Terminal velocity of foxtail millet was observed to be 2.70 ± 0.15 m.s-1for thewhole grains. The angle of repose was found to be 24.30o ± 1.70 for the foxtail millet. The mean coefficient of internalfriction of foxtail millet was 1.23 ± 0.07. Whereas, the mean coefficient of external friction of foxtail millet was found to be0.45 ± 0.01 and 0.52 ± 0.03 on galvanized iron sheet and card board, respectively .Key words: Aerodynamic properties, Engineering properties, Frictional properties, Physical properties,Proximate composition
