Abstract
The presence of pesticide residues in agricultural products raises serious health concern for consumers. A total of
ninety different field and market collected samples of okra in NorthEastern Karnataka were contaminated with residues of
organophosphate, synthetic pyrethroid, triazole, benzimidazole, neonicotinoid, abamectin, diamide, acetanilide and IGR
group. The most frequently detected pesticides are profenophos, acephate, triazophos, carbendazim, hexaconazole,
imidacloprid, metolachlor, bifenthrin, emamectin benzoate and fenpyroximate. Pesticides reported above the MRL were
profenophos (8 samples), acephate (29 samples), hexaconazole (14 samples), thiacloprid (2 samples), carbofuran (1
sample) and triazophos (15 samples). Analysis of okra samples has indicated only few pesticides showed hazard index
more than 1; however remaining pesticide residues pose no threat to human’s health as estimated hazard indices being below 1.
