Abstract

Rural non-farm activities are gaining importance in recent years since it provides gainful employment and income
to the farm households throughout the year which improves their standard of living and alleviate poverty. The significance
of the rural non-farm sector can hardly be denied when seen in relation with the increasing saturation in growth of
agricultural employment and the growing rural-urban divide in a globalizing India. Keeping in view of this, the study was
conducted to identify and determine the nature and extent of non-farm activities and factors influencing to participate in
non-farm activities. Multistage random sampling method was employed to collect the primary data by using pre-structured
schedule. Descriptive statistical analysis was carried out to calculate the results revealed that out of 180 samples the
number of households who adopted farming with NFA (non-farm activities) was more than farming alone. In rainfed
situation farming with their own business was more whereas farming with small business/cottage industries was more under
irrigated situation implying that the distribution of NFA was high in case of rainfed situation than irrigated situations. Under
rainfed situation the members employed more in shop keeping business while the private jobs occupied the major portion
in irrigated situation. By comparing both the situations it unfolds that NFA provide gainful employment for the people
under rainfed situation during off-season.
