Analyzing information needs of rural women: A home and farm management perspective

Abstract


Rural women play the dual roles of managing the farm as well as home affairs. Need of information is vital to ruralwomen as it is a critical input for modernizing of farm production and home management in rural areas. In order to know theinformation needs of rural women regarding home and farm management the present study was conducted during the year2017-18 in Dharwad district. The sample consisted of randomly selected 75 rural women from each taluka and thereforethe total sample size for the study was 150 rural women. The information was collected from the sample with the help ofpre-tested interview schedule by personal interview method. The results indicated that majority of the rural women werehaving nuclear families, small family size, medium income and medium level of mass media participation. Most of the ruralwomen need information on preparation of handicrafts-knitting, crochet, embroidery (94 %), care of pregnant and lactatingwomen (92.66 %), preparation of consumer chemicals-soaps & detergents, phenyl (90.66 %), information about traininginstitutions (90 %), value addition to fruits and vegetables (88 %) related to home management. 79.33 per cent of the womenneed information on vegetable cultivation, high yielding varieties (76 %), dairy farming (65.33 %) related to farm management.Hence, access to information is critical for rural women to update their knowledge in various fields and perform efficientlytheir activities.
