Study on physical properties of IR-64 rice (Oryza sativa L.) at different thermal conditions

SHIVAJI RATHOD, K. T. RAMAPPA

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine some of the physical propertiesof IR-64 rice.Standard procedures were followed for determination ofthe physical properties of IR-64 rice variety having initial moisturecontent of 11% (w.b.). The grains were conditioned for three differentmoisture levels (22, 24 and 26%w.b.). The results revealed that thelength, width and thickness of IR-64 rice variety ranged from 6.42 to7.28 mm, 1.78 to 2.36 mm and 1.72 to 1.89 mm, respectively. Thegeometric mean diameter varied from 2.69 to 3.15 mm and thearithmetic mean diameter varied from 3.30 to 3.84 mm. The surfacearea and unit volume ranged from 22.73 to 31.17 mm2 and 3.27 to5.41 mm3, respectively. The sphericity and aspect ratio were observedto be in the range of 41.90 to 45.22 percent and 27.72 to 32.41 per cent, respectively. The bulk density, true density and porosity were foundto be ranged from 782.52 to 715.33 kg. m-3, 1204.33 to 1279.63 kg. m-3and 38.16 to 49.23 percent, respectively whereas the thousand grainweight varied from 18.45 to 23.65 g.
